Growing Gardens Gently

The Gardener

Jessica is a creative gardener who works collaboratively with clients, assisting them with garden layout, plant selection and ongoing care to create places of beauty, abundance and biodiversity. She has prior experience spanning ornamental horticulture, regenerative market gardening & plant propagation. After a stint as a horticultural researcher on BBC Gardeners’ World, she swapped the clipboard and pen for spade and secateurs, and now tends gardens using organic methods and a lot of love. Jessica works between South West London and Bristol.

Testimonials

“We have worked for many years with Jess and she has absolutely transformed our garden. She surveyed the land in detail and then supported me to design what I dreamed for the space. Her knowledge and understanding of plants wildlife and the land itself is astounding and it’s been so enriching to learn from her as my garden progresses. Jess is a great listener and very intuitive to what is right for the flora and fauna of a garden. Her decisions are drawn from her extensive knowledge of the natural world and grounded deeply in positive ethics and values for the land. She is hardworking, reliable, thorough and deeply thoughtful in all her work. Thank you Jess for transforming my garden for our family!”

Hannah, Pensford

“Jess has been such a joy to work with throughout our garden renovation journey. We have a relatively small urban garden that is quirky in it’s layout and sprawls over different levels. Jess has worked collaboratively with us every step of the way to problem solve how the make the most of this space. She created a final design that maximises fun for the children, allows us plenty of space for socialising and brings colourful and wild nature that will be easy to maintain even with our limited gardening skills! Jess organised several face to face and online calls during which she helped to draw out our hopes and family needs to create plans that we then went onto tweak collaboratively. Jess’s knowledge of plants and gardens alongside her technical and communication skills make her a perfect designer to work with.”

Nurturing green places using organic and regenerative methods

1. Sustainable Design

Creating beautiful, functional, abundant spaces.

Inspired by permaculture, my approach to garden and planting design builds on the bones of the existing garden, valuing and retaining features that work, whilst improving function and appearance. I believe that good design should be accessible, collaborative and dynamic.

Planting Plans:

Planting palettes are developed that ensure structure, form and seasonal interest, and are guided by the mantra, ‘Right Plant, Right Place’.

Garden Designs:

Working closely with you, I will draw up a layout plan for your garden, along with a materials palette and 3D visuals. Together these will enable yourself or a skilled landscaper to make improvements to your garden’s structure and function.

Further information on the design process available on request.

2. Organic Gardening

Supporting you to tend your garden with horticultural knowledge and skill.
  • Composting & soil care
  • Planting, weeding & plant care
  • Pruning & training of trees and climbers
  • Growing and caring for edible plants
  • Habitat creation

I am fully qualified in both horticulture and design and can tend your garden with a long term view on the health and aesthetics of planting.

I work sensitively and gently with gardens, building soil, rejuvenating overgrown and tired plants and curating new plantings to enhance those that exist.

Inspiration is taken from natural landscapes and plants are carefully chosen to create diverse, resilient communities that bring a sense of place.
